We get really excited when we discover young talent and are able to provide them with a platform to share their skill with the world. Barry de Villiers is one such a young man who will be showcasing a very different talent at KAMERS Stellenbosch this year. This 26-year old is the creative filmmaker behind our recent KAMERS Cape Town videos, our Stellenbosch 2013 video and many other stunning films.
Growing up in Stellenbosch, Barry’s passion for storytelling and visual feasts has been apparent from a young age and as an outlet for his creative vision, he embarked into a world of film, starting out with home movies and simple short films. After graduating with a cum laude from film school in 2011, Barry jumped head first into music video production, combining his love of music and film. In 2012 he started an independent label, called Roundabout Films, specializing in the underground music industry in South Africa. Barry is currently involved in directing, shooting and editing of artistic and corporate work.
Although he believes that every project calls for its own style, Barry’s style often includes New Wave and Avant-Garde Cinema techniques, psychedelic editing effects and surrealism. He draws inspiration and influence from the great auteurs like David Lynch, Ingmar Bergman, Werner Herzog, Luis Bunuel, Jim Jarmusch, Lars von Trier, Stanley Kubrick, Andrei Tarkovsky to name a few. His visual work is inspired by music, dreams and the concoction of things you see and feel in everyday life.
To date he has made videos for artists from Cape Town to California. He recently won ‘Best Live Coverage’ at the 2015 Short & Sweet Film Awards for his work with the Night Beats (Seattle, USA) on their South African tour in 2013.
The visuals seen here formed part of the band Medicine Boy’s visual projections on their recent tour of Europe. These visuals will also form part of a special video display – something completely new at KAMERS Stellenbosch this year.
