A home full of personally chosen local product just holds something inspiring. Not only can you take pride in your support of talent that’s right on your doorstep, but each item inevitably has a story behind it. “I was at the KAMERS/Makers show at Irene (or Stellenbosch) this summer, wine glass in hand, when I stumbled upon this gorgeous piece…” you’ll start off telling your guests. In that sense, supporting local design makes your home about who you are.
#1 Beaded beauty
Add a splash of colour to any surface with the expertly crafted bowls from Master Wire and Bead Craft. Co-founder Bishop Tarambawamwe uses a skill he first learnt as a child when he was making his own toys out of wire and beads to create beautiful objects with a strong African feel. Find them at the Stellenbosch KAMERS/Makers show.
#2 Basket case
Add a different texture to your living room with a crocheted basket by Lapoplap. Literally meaning “material on material” the décor brand is all about handcrafted items, aiming to bring our focus back to items that offer that personal touch. They’ve come a long way since the first KAMERS in 2003 and are now also available in the KAMERS Online Marketplace.
#3 Treat Fluffy too
It’s no secret that our pets enjoy comfort as much as we do, and all the better if Fluffy’s accessories have a little style too. Benji + Moon offers a range of handmade items for pets including a lovely felt Merino wool bed that will have your pet sleeping stylishly in any room. Look out for them at KAMERS/Makers Irene, Pretoria, 28 November – 4 December.
#4 Botanical prints
You’ll see variations on the botanicals theme everywhere at the moment but one particular local artist who is doing it like you’ve never seen before is Isobel Sippel. Her gorgeous handcrafted soft furnishings – from cushions to tablecloths – are a dramatic take on the trend and well worth checking out. You’ll find her gorgeous linen products at the Stellenbosch show.

#5 Glass gardens
If you’re looking for beautiful pieces of interest, then look out for the glass gardens by Arkivio at the Irene show. These could work really well as a dinner table centerpiece, or simply as a bit of greenery on your coffee table.
#6 Let that light shine
These clever creations by Lumenpretoria involve copper pipe and beautiful vintage lightbulbs for a raw effect that will turn any room into a trendy space. From pendant light fittings and standing lamps, to cute table lamps that double up as cutlery holders, you’ll no doubt find something you’ll love. Look them up at the Stellenbosch show.
#BONUS It’s style-o-clock
If you can’t make either of the upcoming shows, don’t despair. You can find a large range of amazing design pieces at our online marketplace like these modern wall clocks from Tydloos. Thanks to the hand-applied technique, no piece is the same, but all have a simple yet inspiring feel.
